A well-written design brief is a treasure

No matter how hard we try, it can still happen on either the agency or the client side that communication slips somewhere and the finished graphic work is not quite as we hoped for. Since no graphic designer is a mind reader, we’ve put together some of the key concerns you should think through as a client before writing a design brief. This makes it easier to avoid multi-round changes. Let's see!

This should be included in the design brief!

  • Short description of the task: a summary so that the graphic artist understands for what purpose, and what he is making
  • Defining the goal: what is the purpose of the given creative material, for example: call to action - click on the website, general awareness, etc.
  • Defining a target group: who do you want to reach with the given graphic material
  • Defining platforms: on which platforms the given graphic will appear, for example: only printed material, FB page, etc.
  • Size determination: especially for printed materials, send the exact size and print delivery parameters (if you are unsure, contact your agency with the printing house)
  • Content: it is important to think ahead before you send to the designer what content should be included in a given graphic material (text, image, contacts)
  • Text: Make sure to send any text which must be included in the material
  • Images: whether there is a specific image that needs to be displayed on a particular graphic, or if there is no specific idea in your head, define it clearly
  • Logos: what logos should be displayed on a given graphic material
  • Design idea: a great help to you if you have a clear idea, but even if you do not then you can send a sample from a design you like so the designer knows that you want a certain mood, colors, etc.
  • Deadline: It is very important when the final material needs to be delivered so that we can plan with it

How to giving back feedback to graphic materials?

Here are some important things to keep in mind when giving feedback for effectiveness:

  • Contact: If possible, who gave the task write the request for the whole team
  • Modification Requests: If you did not get back what you envisioned, describe what is currently what can and cannot be; what you don’t like, and the graphic designer can shape the plans accordingly
  • Modify content: If possible, use change tracking in that document. Especially for larger documents, you can save a lot of time if you don't have to look for modified parts in every fix (suggestion: use Google Sheets or Google Docs - you can also easily import a Word or Excel document here)
  • Filename: If you selected one of several different designs, send the file name

By following the tips above, you can greatly facilitate the design process, make task issuance more efficient and faster, and get everyone the graphic work they wanted!
